Anticipation builds up as you turn off the main gravel road toward Canyon Lodge. The soft colours of apricot sand merging with the pale green of euphorbias is a prelude to the loveliness of the lodge surrounds. As you turn a final bend, the lodge comes into view. Nestled between rounded granite boulders, Canyon Lodge’s quaint century-old farmhouse reception, verdant garden and cool pond invite and welcome you into the enchanted enclave. Away from the world, there is a gentle rhythm of peace to find here, reaffirming the goodness of life. For those just wanting a break from the road, lounge at the pool, take a snooze in the coolness of your thatch-and-stone chalet or dip into a book on the terrace. The awe-inspiring canyon wakens our senses to the raw and powerful beauty of Nature.
With its extensive, unique and creatively entertaining restaurants, bars, deli, lobby-lounge, sea facing terraces and beach kiosk, set on this historic and iconic site, the Strand Hotel Swakopmund is a destination in itself for all visitors to and residents of Swakopmund. Its architectural inspiration finds its roots deep in Namibian German history and reflects this in a tasteful contemporary manner. The interiors are residential in nature, and the brief to all designers involved is to create a non-hotel hotel. One as charming and welcoming as the town it is in. Simply very warm and comfortable, and as they say in German: “”Gemutlich”” with a genuine “”sense-of-place””. Every aspect of the Strand Hotel Swakopmund is being developed according to international four-star standards.
Complementing the magnificence of a red sand sea, Namib Desert Lodge lies at the foot of ancient fossilized dunes. Make some space for wonder. A sunset or early morning drive through the red dunes exploring the sand masterpiece is breathtaking. Atop the ridge, as the sand begins to glow deep rich sienna, a view of utter beauty is illuminated in gold, extending from the soft dunes around you to the green ribbon of riverine trees in the distance and the purple-blue mountains. Tolkien would be taken aback – and inspired, I’m sure, by such fantastical scenery!
