Day 2 - Windhoek - Namib Naukluft Park

Route:      Windhoek to Namib Naukluft Park
Distance: 310 km

Journey: After breakfast embark on the drive to Sossusvlei, home to the giant red dunes, some of the most spectacular in the world, standing up to 300m high. It is a wild, beautiful and romantic spot, with sparse vegetation edging a few water courses which flow in from the Tsauchab River. Here Springbok and Ostrich are often seen. On arrival check into your hotel and relax before dinner.

Day 3 - Sesriem – Sossusvlei - Sesriem

Route:      Sesriem – Sossusvlei - Sesriem

Journey: Today you have an early start to drive to Sossusvlei and enter the national park at sunrise. The first rays of the sun light up the dunes with a deep orange glow making for a photographer's delight, and you will have the opportunity to climb “Big Daddy”, one of the tallest dunes.  You will also explore the cool passageways of the Sesriem Canyon on foot. The canyon is small but very picturesque - many plants grow in the shade and shelter it offers, and water pools attract several species of birds and animals. Sesriem means 'six thongs'; which refers to the six lengths of rawhide rope (from a wagon) needed to make a line long enough to lower from the rim of the gorge to the stream below, in order to haul up a bucket of water.

Day 4 - Namib Naukluft Park - Swakopmund

Route:      Namib Naukluft Park - Swakopmund
Distance: 345 km

Journey: Begin the drive to Walvis Bay stopping for photos at the Tropic of Capricorn sign. You will also stop at the Gaub and Kuiseb passes, and at any points of interest along the road. At Walvis Bay you will spend time at the lagoon which is Paradise for bird lovers with roughly 50 species of seabirds, including vivid flocks of flamingos, bulky- billed pelicans and glossy black cormorants. The promenade stretches for 3 kilometres along the water’s edge and it is a great place for a stroll. Continue to Swakopmund where the rest of the day will be at leisure.

Day 5 - Swakopmund

Journey:  During the morning participate in The Living Desert Tour, originally developed by Tommy himself in the 1990’s, is a unique 4x4 adventure drive through the dunes outside Swakopmund, Namibia. Just the drive in the dunes is an amazing experience, but Tommy will show you a lot more than sand. The tour takes you from the vegetated, life-rich eastern side of the dunes, right through the dunes to the Atlantic Ocean on the western side of the dune belt.

Afternoon at leisure to explore the town.

The Himba are the last semi-nomadic herders in Namibia, and their simple lifestyle has remained unchanged for generations, as they have chosen their traditional lifestyle over modernization. They have become iconic for using a characteristic red paste made of butter, fat and red ochre that they apply to their skin, and which serves an aesthetic purpose in beautifying their bodies, as well as protecting them from the scorching sun.
